This song refers to the migrant workers from Oklahoma. In the 1920s in California the term Okie which means resident, native, or cultural descendant of Oklahoma was applied to refer to the very poor migrants. The Dust Bowl along with the "Okie" migration of the 1930s brought in over a million new displaced people.
