Why is Alfred the Great important to the national identity of England? He freed England from Spanish rule. He reformed English law by establishing the first monarchy. He drove out invaders and united England around a single leader. He encouraged tolerance for foreigners and for religions other than Christianity.

As the first (self-styled) King of the Anglo-Saxons, Alfred the Great drove out the Vikings (mostly) and united the people of the southern British isles around one leader (him).

Against great odds, Alfred defeated the Vikings, allowing them to establish Danelaw in Scotland. He declared himself King of the Anglo-Saxons and was viewed as a wise ruler.
