The Catholic Church set up the Roman Inquisition, also known formally as the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition to fight the spread of Protestantism in Europe. This was a system of tribunals that investigated individuals accused of crimes relating to alternate religious doctrine or beliefs as well as individuals accused of committing offenses relating to heresy. Religious reconversion was often practiced by the church as well.
