What very important process occurs during meiosis that recombines genes increasing variation in all offspring

Respuesta :

Genetic variation is increased by meiosis. During fertilisation, 1 gamete from each parent combines to form a zygote. ... The result is 4 haploid daughter cells known as gametes. Independent assortment is the process where the chromosomes move randomly to separate poles during meiosis

Crossing over is an essential process that takes place during meiosis, which recombines genes and thus enhances variation in all the offspring.

Crossing over takes place when homologous chromosomes produce pairs during prophase I of meiosis.

• It is the exchange of genetic material between the homologous chromosomes, which results in the production of new combinations of genes on every chromosome.

• This genetic material exchange can take place various times within the homologous chromosomes pair, giving rise to the new set of genes, thus, giving rise to variation within the offspring. This phenomenon is termed recombination.

Thus, crossing over at the time of meiosis gives rise to variation within the offspring.
