Sundiata Keita was the founder of the Mali Empire in West Africa. He ruled from 1235 to 1255 AD, establishing the Mali Empire as the dominant force in the region.
Sundiata was born around 1217 AD. His mother, Sogoron, was the second wife of King Magan of Mali. Growing up, Sundiata was ridiculed as crippled. He was too weak to walk. However, King Magan loved and protected Sundiata. This made the king's first wife, Sassma, jealous of Sundiata and his mother. She wanted to make her son Touman king one day.
When Sundiata was three years old, the king died. Sundiata's brother-in-law, Touman, became king. Touman treated Sundiata badly, made fun of him, and constantly chose him.
When Sundiata was a child, Mali was a fairly small kingdom. When he was a child, Soso conquered Mali and took control. Sundiata became a prisoner of Soso and lived with the leader of Soso.
