PLZ HELP! Lenny is 3 times older than Max. When you subtract Max’s age from Lenny’s age, you get 24. How old is Lenny and how old is Max?
a) Write an equation that represents the situation. Explain any variable used.
b) Solve the equation from Part (a). Show your work. State the solution as a complete sentence.

(l = Lenny
m = Max)

Lenny is 3 times as old as Max.
3m = l

When you subtract Max's age from Lenny's age, you get 24.
L - m = 24

Put in the value of l.
3m - m = 24
There is our equation.

Now solve

2m = 24
2m/2 = 24/2
m = 12

3 * 12 = l
36 = l

The equation is 3m - m = 24
Max is 12 and Lenny is 36.

3x - x = 24  2x = 24 ÷ 2.   ÷2 (Cancels out) 24 ÷ 2 = 12  Max is 12 years old, Lenny is 36 years old.  ( (12) x 3 = y = 36 )
