In a typical fault-block mountain, large blocks of crust are uplifted along normal faults. Fault-block mountain are formed when faults or cracks in the earth's crust force some materials or blocks of rock up and others down. These mountains are most common at divergent plate boundaries. Sierra Nevada mountains in North America are one example of typical fault-block mountains.
