If there is more than one work by the same author, If two authors have the same last name. Hope this helps :)
The need to include more information to distinguish one author from another generally occurs when there are two or more authors with the same last names. It could also be a result of when different books are written by the same author.
According to the Modern Language Association style of citation, it is mandatory to include the last name of the author and the page number in any in-text citation. This is done so that there are references available for the readers to easily refer to.
- But at the same time, such means of citation may prove to be confusing in many cases.
- For instance, an author may produce numerous books. So, putting only the last name and the page number will be confusing for the readers to refer to if they do not have the name of the particular book that's been cited. Therefore, if the book titles are also included in the citation, this will make it easier for readers to identify the source(s) used.
- The second is when authors have the same last names. This is also confusing for in-text citations that use only the last names and page numbers. So, if the initials of the authors are included, then readers can differentiate between the authors.
Thus, when citing sources, issues like authors with the same last names as well as numerous works by the same author can pose a problem for readers. These issues can be resolved if extra details like the first name abbreviation of the author(s) or the title of the book are included in the citations.
