Try expressing the problem in the form of two equations. y, or the first number, is equal to half of (1/2) a second number (x) plus 3:
y = 1/2x + 3
y is also equal to 1/4 of the second number (x) plus 5:
y = 1/4x + 5
An easy way to check using the graph is to compare the y-intercepts. The first equation we came up with has a y-intercept of 3, and the second one has a y-intercept of 5. If you look at the graph, the equations intersect the y-axis at (0, 3) and (0, 5). Check ✓
