(1) Mechanical digestion- occuring in the mouth with the help of the teeth and in the stomach in which the larger food substances are broken into small pieces.
(2) Chemical digestion- occuring in the mouth, stomach and the small intestine with the secretion of enzymes.

Explanation: Stomach is involved in both the processes of digestion. Mechanical digestion occurs by the mechanical mixing of food through the process of peristalsis. It is the wave-like contraction and relaxation of the muscles in the wall of the stomach. Chemical digestion of food takesplace by secretion of enzymes like the pepsinogen and lipase. Pepsinogen is converted into pepsin which acts on the proteins and lipase acts on the lipids. Hydrochloric acid secreted by the stoach results in the conversion of the pepsiongen to pepsin.
Amylase is the enzyme involved in the breakdown of carbohydrates. It is secreted by the salivary glands of the mouth and the pancreas in the form of salivary amylase and pancreatic amylase respectively. Thus, secretion of enzymes that breakdown carbohydrates is not a function of the stomach.
