Mr. Abernathy purchased a selection of wrenches for his shop. The total cost was $78. He bought the same number of $1.50 and $2.50 wrenches, and half that many $4 wrenches. The number of $3 wrenches was one more than the number of $4 wrenches. How many of each did he purchase?

let the number of $1.5 and $2.5 be x. The number of $4 was (x+0.5x)=1.5x and that of $3 was (x+0.5x+1)=(1.5x+1)
thus the total amount will be:
1.5x+2.5x+4(1.5x)+3(1.5x+1)=78
1.5x+2.5x+6x+4.5x+3=78
14.5x=78-3
14.5x=75

thus:
The number of :
$1.5 was 5
$2.5 was 5
$3 was 1.5*5+1=7.5=8.5
$4 was 1.5*5=4.5
