Describe in your own words what is meant by the term ‘Tragedy of the Commons'. Discuss the impact this process has on both renewable and nonrenewable resources, and give one example of each.

The "Tragedy of the Commons" refers to an economic problem where individuals compete to gain the greatest benefit from a common and scarce resource in order to survive, leading to its exploitation and depletion.

For example, the ocean offers a variety of marine species that we feed on. In time, if the increasing human population exceeds the rate of production of these marine resources, there will come a time that they would face extinction. 

Moreover, aside from the burgeoning human population, though these marine resource are renewable, there are human activities that aggravate the depletion of these resources, like excessive pollution, development of new technology, illegal fishing activities, use of pesticides (for agricultural production which can be carried off to the sea). 

As for the non-renewable resource, one example could be the excessive use of petroleum that can be attributed to global industrialization. Because the demand for fuel is constantly increasing, because it is a non-renewable resource, using the concept of the "Tragedy of the Commons", we know that soon, these will be depleted too.

The tragedy of the commons is basically when a species, such as humans, compete for resources that everybody needs to survive.

For example, we could use renewable energy such as wind turbines for energy. Although it's clean and renewable, once the human population increases more and more, there will be many wind turbines needed to create energy. Because of this, habitats of animals may be lost to construction, a lot of money will be needed for the equipment and workers, and electricity will cost more in general.

A Non-renewable example could be oil and gasoline. Eventually, as gas is demanded more and more by more people, it will eventually become so expensive because people will be running out of it in the future since it's a non-renewable source of energy. Since more and more people will need it, less and less gas will be left, which will cause prices to go up, and those who can't afford it won't even be able to get a car.
