You Never Leave the Hollow
by Kirby Lawson & Jewell Parker Rhodes
PROMPT
[1] I buried Pa on that rise by the Douglas fir. My fingernails were still
caked with dirt from digging the grave as I sat, sharing his view of the
valley below. From my perch, I could see a Model T make its slow way
along the road.
[2] Aunt Olive.
[3] I couldn't fault Pa for dying, but I was mighty irked² that he'd set
Aunt Olive on me. At thirteen, I would manage fine on my own.
[4] The automobile would reach our shack soon. I stood, brushing
grass from my skirt, calculating that I had about twenty minutes to
pack my things to start a life with Pa's persnickety' eldest sister.
[5] Or I could...
RESPONSE
[6] Or, I could run. Far, fast, deeper, higher into the woods and
mountains.
[7] I take off-wishing I'd worn my overalls instead of a skirt. But it
didn't seem right burying Pa in anything less than my Sunday best.
