Ion channels are proteins embedded in the plasma membrane that allow ions to move between the extracellular and the intracellular spaces. Based on its function and location, describe or illustrate (1) the key features of an ion channel protein’s shape and (2) the chemical properties of its amino acids. Then, describe or illustrate an example of how a mutation from glutamine (hydrophilic)to alanine (hydrophobic)within the passageway of the channel will negatively impact cellular function.
