They were inseparable. 2 One day, John Gray died. He was buried in Greyfriars churchyard in 1858. When the church service was over, everyone left; however, Bob stayed behind. They had been inseparable. 3 That night, he was still at the graveside. Friends came by and invited him home with them. Most of the time Bob went with them, but he always left after eating. Neighbors and friends found him back at the cemetery early the next morning. He was found sitting by the grave of his friend. 4 Friends told other people about Bob’s behavior. So, others became interested in Bob and invited him to their homes. He went for a short time, but always returned to John’s grave. They tried to reason with Bob, but he just didn’t understand. 5 Finally, children started taking food and water to the cemetery for Bob. Sometimes, if the weather was really bad, a woman would take a shawl to cover him. A bronze medal was made for him to wear because he was so faithful to the memory of his friend. 6 One morning, fourteen years later, Bob was found quiet and peaceful beside John’s grave. He was buried close by, so the two friends could always be together. 7 Baroness Burdett-Coutts heard of Bob’s story of friendship and loyalty. With her wealth, she was able to do something that would encourage people to develop a respect and goal of being a loyal friend. She paid to have a fountain and life-size statue made in Bob’s honor. 8 William Bodi unveiled the statue and fountain in Candlemaker’s Hall in Edinburgh, Scotland, on November 15, 1873. It is now a tourist attraction visited daily by those who have heard of Greyfriar’s Fountain. It is a testimony of a little Skye Terrier dog’s loyalty of never deserting his master.
