CARD: 5
Thermal Energy
ORGANIZATIONAL PATTERNS
Thermal energy is defined as the energy
contained within
a system that is
responsible for its temperature. This thermal
energy causes the molecules to vibrate
and move around. When two substances
with different temperatures are brought
into contact, thermal energy will flow from
the warmer substance to the cooler
substance. It will continue until both
substances reach the same temperature.
This can be demonstrated by placing an
ice cube in a cup of warm water. The
thermal energy from the warm water will
flow to the ice cube, causing it to melt.
Once all of the ice has melted, both the
water and the ice will be at the same
temperature.
In the article, which statement best
explains the organizational pattern
used?
The problem of getting substances
to the same temperature is solved by
putting them together.
The process of transferring thermal
energy is explained with a description
of how it works with water.
The temperatures of the substances
are compared to emphasize their
similarities and differences.
The classification of energy is used
to show how change can happen.
How does the organizational pattern
above support the controlling idea o
the article?
