The western swing style is a blend of jazz and country music where improvisation over a predetermined group of chords, tempo, and rhythm allows for western swing songs to evolve uniquely in every performance. In this example of the San Antonio Rose, these influences are clearly heard, but an older style of calling from country dances is also present. Calling means that a member of the band speaks directions, or lyrics (often sounding like a conversation) during parts of the song in addition to singing.
