Rory is starting his second semester of state university. The first semester was, in Rory's words, "not awesome". Away from home for the first time, he found it difficult to navigate this new life solely on his own. The familiar structures of home and high school were not there, and he found himself wasting time, partying too much, and just not able to "make himself" as he puts it, do what was needed. He failed all of his classes. Now, with a lot of talking and convincing his parents and the school, he's back for another try. It's been made clear to him that this. is. it. No third chances. As the term begins, he can't shake the constant fear that he is forgetting something. He tries to remember what he did in high school that helped him but it just doesn't see to come back to him. His college friends still just want to party (they apparently were able to pass their classes) so they are really not helpful. He's getting down on himself: sad, scared, angry. Rory finds himself saying things like "screw it! I never wanted this, anyway!" Which isn't true, but it helps him feel a little better. Rory's lost weight, doesn't sleep, doesn't smile, is stressed out ALL the time. He feels like "it's all on the line for me", and is doubtful of his ability to pull out of this situation.
1. Worth 15 points. Evaluate the 4 D's for Rory. (The 4 D's are discussed in the first 5 minutes of the Tutorial video in your Week 2 module). Explain your answers, where you identify the four D's, and then assess each one using the frame of Rory's stated experience, not what we as observers may think or believe. If there are elements that you cannot fully assess with the information given (this is likely), what additional information would you need? Be specific.
2. Worth 15 points. We all go through hard times. This is an expected and normal part of life. Any life situation that we would call a "hard time" can result in the 4 D's, but these alone are not enough to be considered a psychological disorder. What else, in your view, would you need to understand about Rory at this time to diagnose a psychological disorder?
3. Worth 15 points. Every college student has a number of bio-psycho-social contributors that are specific to the college experience. Identify for Rory at least 3 bio, 3 psycho, and 3 social-cultural contributors to his current mental health situation. Base your assessment on what you are hearing in this case only. Don't speculate!
4. Worth 10 points. Does Rory meet criteria for a disorder at this time? Explain your answer. (half of this score is extra credit)
