Set up fermentation experiment
In this activity, you will learn about the factors that cause fermentation.
Estimated time to complete: 30 minutes
Deshawn is conducting an experiment on fermentation. He prepared six bottles. This table shows what he puts in each bottle.
bottle 1 1 cup cold water, 1 packet yeast
bottle 2 1 cup cold water, 1 packet yeast, 2 spoons sugar
bottle 3 1 cup warm water, 1 packet yeast
bottle 4 1 cup warm water, 1 packet yeast, 2 tablespoons sugar
bottle 5 1 cup hot water, 1 packet yeast
bottle 6 1 cup hot water, 1 packet yeast, 2 spoons sugar
He rotated the bottles until the yeast dissolved and placed a balloon on the neck of each bottle. In 20 minutes, he will check and see what happened.
6 bottles have bubbles that are tightly closed at the mouth, the balloons are not inflated
Part A
What questions are being asked through this scientific investigation?
Part B
What are the dependent and independent variables in this experiment? How were external factors controlled in this experiment to ensure that the results only tested the dependent variable?
Part C
Based on what you know about fermentation, write down your predictions for this experiment.
