If someone told you a film worth seeing cost around $7000 to make, what kind of film would you expect? Would you think it would be just some vacuous home movie or a classic that would be a pop culture hit? El Mariachi is certainly not just some random film you could make in an afternoon -- it is a smash hit! Originally made in Spanish for the low-budget home-video market, Robert was the writer, producer, and director of the film. It was shot in Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico and many of the cast members were locals. Having locals play roles in the film helped keep the tight budget in check; he even used the local warden and guard in the opening scenes. Cutting costs wherever possible was a major concern but Robert's foresight and determination paid off in the end. Some of the money he had raised to begin the film was from medical research studies he participated in; that was how serious he was about making El Mariachi.
