Fan fiction
When writing fan fiction, the author uses an existing work (book, movie, TV show, video game, etc,) as a basis for writing a new story that changes or builds upon the original work. True fan fiction retains the general style of the original work by using existing characters, and major themes. The final piece of writing should feel like it could be another chapter or scene woven into the original work.
